Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a procedure performed for women who have disproportionately large breasts and are typically experiencing problems with back, neck, and shoulder pain. Problems with posture, skin irritation, and breathing problems are also common with this condition. Bra straps often leave indentations in the shoulder area. Breast reduction removes excess fat, breast tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer, and lifting them in the process. It also reduces the size of the areola if necessary.

Candidates include women who have very large and sagging breasts, which cause them physical discomfort and limits their activity. Different techniques exist for breast reduction. The most common involves an inverted T or “anchor” incision, which encircles the areola and extends downward in a straight line, then follows the crease under the breast. The amount of tissue removed in order to achieve symptomatic relief can be as little as a pound (approximately 400 grams). Dr. Sholar will discuss with you how much tissue should be removed in order to provide relief of symptoms yet allow your shape to be proportional with the rest of your body. The goal is to provide relief from symptoms but have an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Candidly discuss your goals with your plastic surgeon.  The way you want your result to turn out may not be compatible with what your insurance company dictates.  In this case, performing the breast reduction without the constraints of the insurance requirements (ie: performed as a cosmetic procedure) may be your best option.  Dr. Sholar will help you come to the best conclusion for you.

The procedure takes around 4 hours and can be done as an outpatient under general anesthesia. The patient will be instructed to wear a garment continuously for 4 weeks after the procedure.
