Rhinoplasty

Nasal surgeries include a variety of procedures, which can change the appearance of the nose and/or improve the function of the nose (i.e. breathing). The goal is to create a nose that blends with the shape and symmetry of your face, and in the case of nasal dysfunction, to provide unobstructed breathing. Cosmetic and functional procedures are often performed together.

Candidates include men and women who are looking for improvement in their appearance  attributed to aberrant nasal anatomy or previous trauma to the nose. If the nose is newly-broken, Dr Sholar will first restore the nasal bones to a better position, then later will perform a rhinoplasty after the bones have healed completely. Rhinoplasty is generally not recommended on teenagers who have not yet completed their growth spurt.  Incisions are made inside the nostrils, though a small, external incision under the nose may be necessary at times. The skin is lifted off the nasal skeleton and cartilages. The nasal skeleton is then sculpted to the desired shape and the skin is re-draped onto the new nasal framework. The procedure takes 3-4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient. A light splint and tape are worn 5-7 days after surgery. This is removed in the office along with any external sutures.
