The advantages of SmartLipo over traditional liposuction alone are the skin-tightening effects that the laser offers, minimal bruising, and less downtime.

This laser-assisted lipolysis procedure is the combination of two well-established technologies:  tumescent liposuction and laser skin tightening.  Introduced in 2007, SmartLipo was the first laser to be approved by the FDA to be used for fat dissolution combined with fat removal by tumescent liposuction. It is performed using a one millimeter cannula (or tube) inserted into the skin so that a laser fiber inside of the cannula delivers energy directly to fat cells, causing them to rupture.  Simultaneously, tissue around the area coagulates, resulting in overall tighter skin. The laser may be utilized alone to treat smaller areas of fat, such as below the chin, or in combination with tumescent liposuction to remove larger areas of fat such as in the abdomen, hips and thighs.

What areas of the body can be treated?

SmartLipo is ideal for the neck, jawline, arms, breasts, bra-lines, abdomen, love handles, saddle bags, inner and outer thighs and knees.

Am I a candidate?

SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting is meant for areas that do not respond to diet or exercise. The perfect candidate is in good health and of normal body weight.  SmartLipo is not a method of weight loss.

How does SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting compare to conventional liposuction?

Conventional liposuction is meant to remove greater amounts of fat. However, since this can leave behind loose skin, laser assisted lipolysis is often a perfect complement after conventional liposuction has been performed.

How can SmartLipo  be done in the office instead of a hospital OR?

First, the “tumescent” portion of the liposuction is performed by instilling dilute solutions of lidocaine and epinephrine into the fatty areas of the areas to be treated.  This fluid anesthetizes the areas to be treated, decreases bleeding, and helps suspend the fat cells in the fluid so they are easier to remove. The procedure can thus be performed while the patient is awake with minimal discomfort and quicker recovery.

The SmartLipo laser technology utilizes a 1064 nanometer wave length laser that targets red blood cells and thus results in less blood loss. In addition, it produces a burst of energy as it enters the fatty tissue that dissolves the fat so it can be removed by suctioning. This improves the patient comfort of the procedure by being able to melt the fat so it is easier to remove. Smaller areas of melted fat can actually reabsorb into the body and may not even need suctioning for optimal results.

By utilizing the tumescent technique in addition to using the laser, SmartLipo procedures can be performed in an office-based setting while the patient is awake. No longer is it a requirement that patients be put to sleep using general anesthetics nor do they need to be admitted to the hospital for the procedure. Moreover, SmartLipo allows patients to return to normal activities more rapidly than when the older methods were used.
 

Is there a recovery period?

SmartLipo is a minimally invasive procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia.  Some light trauma can occur, but you’ll be able to return to work in a couple of days and resume exercise after 2 weeks. You will also be required to wear a compression garment for a few weeks.
 

How many treatments are required?

Typically only one treatment is required. Results can be seen within a week, with continued improvement over 3 to 6 months. However, as with traditional liposuction, you will need to practice patience since the full, optimal SmartLipo skin-tightening results may not be visible for 6 months and up to a year. The more fat that is removed, the longer it will take to achieve maximum results, as your body needs to adapt to a more significant shape change.
 

How else can SmartLipo be used?

SmartLipo can also be used for "touch-ups" and revisions to previously treated areas.  The SmartLipo procedure will improve the body's shape and may reduce cellulite to a certain degree.

SmartLipo may be extremely effective for improving upon body areas that have been previously treated with traditional liposuction.
