Botox for Wrinkles

Botox Cosmetic
Botulinum toxin has revolutionized the area of cosmetic enhancements in recent years because it offers a safe, effective, non-surgical alternative to reducing the visible signs of aging of the face and neck. Botulinum toxin A, a purified protein fashioned from botulism bacteria, binds to the nerve endings, preventing the release of the chemical transmitters that activate muscles. When injected into specific areas of the face and neck, it temporarily (four to six months) paralyzes the small muscles that cause frown lines, crow's feet and other facial wrinkles. Botulinum toxin treatment decreases muscle activity thereby preventing the appearance of “dynamic” wrinkles that are caused by repeated facial expressions. The toxin acts on the junctions between nerves and muscles, preventing the release of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine from the nerve endings. Tiny amounts are injected into a specific facial muscle so only the targeted impulse of that muscle will be blocked, causing a localized relaxation. Since the muscle can no longer make the offending facial expression, the lines gradually smooth out from disuse and creases are prevented from deepening. Other muscles that are not treated are not affected to maintain a natural look and expressions. The overall result is a refreshed, more open and less serious appearance.

Botox™ for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is a troublesome problem that results in awkward social situations for those that are affected. For example, salesmen with sweaty palms are at a distinct disadvantage. Unfortunately, topical and oral medications, iontophoresis, and surgery have not proven to be efficacious in the majority of patients. In fact surgery can result in compensatory hyperhidrosis in other parts of the body.

Because the eccrine glands are innervated by sympathetic nerves that use acetylcholine as the neurotransmitter, Botox™ is effective in temporarily reducing or abolishing sweat production in treated areas. Since hyperhidrosis is generally not considered a cosmetic problem, the Medical Cosmetic Center will work with patients to have their hyperhidrosis procedure pre-certified with their health insurance.
